Indexing and Discovery
This page sets out how the journal’s articles are identified, harvested, discovered and preserved. Each of those is a different thing, and each is stated separately.
IDENTIFIERS
Journal and article identifiers
An identifier makes a work citable and resolvable. It is registered, not awarded, and it is separate from selective indexing.
- ISSN
- 2576-9359, registered for the journal.
- CROSSREF DOI
- Every article receives a Crossref DOI under the prefix 10.14302. The DOI resolves to the article record and links its references to other registered works.
- ORCID
- Author and editor ORCID identifiers are displayed where the contributor has registered one.
Registering an ISSN and depositing DOIs establishes identity and citation linking. Selective journal-level indexing is a separate assessment, described below.
HARVESTING AND DISCOVERY
How the metadata travels
Article metadata is deposited with Crossref on publication, which is what allows reference linking and makes the record available to services that build on Crossref.
WHAT IS DEPOSITED
Title, authors, affiliations where supplied, abstract, publication date, volume, issue, pages, license and reference list are deposited with the DOI.
WHERE IT GOES
Services that harvest Crossref metadata can surface the record. Each such service applies its own selection criteria and its own timing.
SELECTIVE INDEXING
Journal-level indexing
Selective indexing is an editorial assessment made by a database, on its own criteria and its own timetable. It is distinct from identifier registration and from metadata harvesting.
The journal reports here only those databases that have confirmed the journal’s inclusion, with the date the status was last checked. Authors and librarians assessing the journal are encouraged to consult each database directly, and the editorial office will answer a direct question about current status.

Digital preservation
Preservation keeps the scholarly record readable in the long term, independently of the publisher.
This journal’s content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA (the organization behind JSTOR). As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish.
FUNDER DEPOSIT
Deposit in PubMed Central
A funder mandate can require a manuscript to be deposited individually, which is a separate route from journal-level indexing.
Eligible NIH-funded manuscripts may be deposited individually in PubMed Central through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS).
Authors may also deposit the accepted manuscript in an institutional or subject repository in line with the CC BY 4.0 license under which the journal publishes.
