Biography:

Dr. Shimaa M. Motawei is an accomplished researcher and Professor in the Department of Medical Parasitology at Mansoura University, Egypt. Her research is dedicated to the diagnosis, molecular epidemiology, and immunopathogenesis of human parasitic diseases, with a strong focus on protozoan infections. Dr. Motawei has conducted extensive studies on parasites of significant public health importance, such as Toxoplasma gondii, Blastocystis hominis, and Giardia lamblia. She employs a range of modern molecular and immunological techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy and to investigate the association between parasitic infections and various clinical conditions, including autoimmune diseases and cancer. As a dedicated academic, she is actively involved in teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and postgraduate students, contributing significantly to the field of medical parasitology in the region.

Education Details:

  • PhD in Medical Parasitology, Mansoura University, Egypt (2014)
  • MSc in Medical Parasitology, Mansoura University, Egypt (2010)
  • MBBCh (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery), Mansoura University, Egypt (2005)

Professional Background:

  • Professor, Department of Medical Parasitology, Mansoura University (2024–Present)
  • Associate Professor, Department of Medical Parasitology, Mansoura University (2019–2024)
  • Lecturer (Assistant Professor), Department of Medical Parasitology, Mansoura University (2014–2019)
  • Assistant Lecturer, Mansoura University (2010–2014)
  • Demonstrator, Mansoura University (2006–2010)

Achievements:
  • Recipient of the Mansoura University Encouragement Award for Medical Sciences (2019)

Current Research Projects

Her current research focuses on the molecular subtyping of Blastocystis and its clinical relevance in immunocompromised patients. She is also investigating the serological and molecular prevalence of toxoplasmosis among patients with various neurological and rheumatological disorders, aiming to clarify the parasite's role as a potential trigger or exacerbating factor.
